MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
We are Stronger Together
Christine Nielsen
Chief Executive Officer

As we celebrate the release of the spring issue of the Canadian Journal of Medical Laboratory Science, I want to recognize National Medical Laboratory Week, a highlight of this season. Each year, this week gives Canadians a chance to appreciate the skill, dedication and quiet excellence that medical laboratory professionals (MLPs) bring to our health care systems. But for us, as colleagues, advocates and champions of the profession, it is also a time to reflect on our shared identity, our collective achievements and the future we are building together. This year, that reflection feels especially meaningful. As the medical laboratory landscape continues to evolve across Canada, many Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) are navigating questions about their own professional identity. Regulatory models, scopes of practice and workforce structures are being discussed everywhere. And while change can bring opportunity, at CSMLS, we believe it is important to hold space for these conversations so we can both acknowledge the uncertainty they may bring and affirm the deep value of the work MLTs and MLAs perform every day. Just as MLTs are considering what the next phase of their professional identity may look like, we at CSMLS are also looking through a new lens. Now that we are no longer the national certifying body for MLTs, we are leaning more heavily, and with more clarity, into a role we’ve always played: we are the national voice supporting the medical laboratory community through education, advocacy and research, and your professional home for networking and career advancement. Our focus is firmly on strengthening you, the professional, through continuing education, advocacy, resources and community to help you plan and grow your careers from day one through retirement. We are expanding our role as a hub for collaboration and professional growth, ensuring that whether you are an MLT or an MLA, you have a strong national organization championing your needs. Certification was one function we carried out; supporting the people within the profession remains our purpose. Of course, part of that includes continuing to offer certification for MLAs across Canada and MLTs in Alberta. As you read this spring issue, I encourage you to celebrate and recognize the significance of your professional identity, and to know that CSMLS stands with you during National Medical Laboratory Week and through whatever changes the future brings. Our profession continues to evolve, but our commitment to you remains constant. We need one another and the support of our professional networks more than ever. Thank you for everything you do for patients, for your teams, and for Canada’s health care systems.

MESSAGE FROM THE CSMLS BOARD CHAIR
Celebrating What Makes Us Unique
Valentin (Tino) Villatoro
CSMLS Board Chair
As we move through another dynamic year for our profession, I am reminded daily of the tremendous value Canadian medical laboratory professionals bring to our health care system. The rapid pace of advancement in artificial intelligence has sparked important conversations about the future of our work. While new technologies offer exciting opportunities, they also challenge us to remain vigilant in protecting and strengthening our professional identity. The question we must continually ask is: How do we ensure our skills, judgment and expertise remain visible and recognized, even as automated tools become more sophisticated? As professionals working with continually advancing technology, we are no strangers to this question. For me, the answer lies in doubling down on what makes our profession unique. It means highlighting the critical thinking and scientific expertise that no algorithm can replicate. It means ensuring that recruitment and retention efforts reflect the depth and complexity of our roles. And it means celebrating the people behind the results — talented professionals who partner in patient care every single day. National Medical Laboratory Week (NMLW) is one of our most powerful opportunities to do that. This year’s NMLW events, including Canadian landmarks lit up in indigo for Lab Week, are a beautiful and highly visible reminder of the impact we make. Every illuminated building and bridge represents a story of dedication, a team behind the scenes, and a community that relies on our expertise and partnership with other allied health professionals. These moments of national recognition reaffirm why CSMLS continues to advocate for you, our members. Now, more than ever, our focus is on supporting you: the professional whose work sustains the system and is often a primary step in patient care. On a personal note, reflecting on my time as a CSMLS Board Director and as Chair for the past year, I have witnessed a renewed clarity and energy within the organization. The strategic focus, the commitment to listening to members, and the drive to elevate our profession leave me genuinely inspired about where we are heading. CSMLS is taking meaningful steps to ensure that our profession not only adapts to change but thrives within it. I often say that I have gained as much through my service as I have contributed, and I mean that sincerely. My work with CSMLS has expanded my skills in governance, leadership, collaboration and networking. These are the same opportunities the Society strives to provide to members at every stage of their careers. I am grateful for the growth I’ve experienced and proud to support an organization that continues to invest so deeply in its community. As we look ahead, I am confident in our collective ability to meet the challenges of a changing profession while continuing to celebrate the strength of our members.
