Modernizing to Serve You Better

Across Canada, medical laboratory professionals continue to adapt to new technologies, changing workforce realities and increasing demands on our health care system. As your national professional association, CSMLS is evolving too. This year, we begin an exciting period of modernization for our organization. And the changes ahead are being designed with a single purpose in mind: to serve you more effectively. As part of our Strategic Plan, CSMLS is committed to empowering you to thrive in our profession’s constantly changing environment. To achieve this, we are investing in the systems and experiences we need to deliver the membership benefits you need most. Over the coming months, you’ll start seeing the results of this work. We will launch a new member profile experience that offers you greater control and easier access to your member account. We’ll also introduce an online community where you can interact, share experiences, learn from one another and engage directly with CSMLS. These new spaces will create opportunities for collaboration, professional growth, mentorship and networking in ways that reflect how professionals connect and learn today. We are also building a new enterprise database to serve as the foundation for this more integrated and responsive member experience. While much of this work will happen behind the scenes, you’ll see the results in more seamless delivery of member benefits, more personalized communication and new features and services that meet your evolving needs. You are already experiencing one of the first visible steps in this modernization journey. This issue of the Canadian Journal of Medical Laboratory Science (CJMLS) is the first digital-only publication in our history. As a reader, you already know this is a big improvement over our old PDFs! Online publication comes with some benefits. You can read it on a tablet, laptop or smartphone, so your Journal can travel with you wherever you go. Digital delivery also allows us to include video content, more photos and to offer direct links to article references and other helpful sites. Importantly, this is not the end of print. We know many of you continue to value receiving a physical journal (we still love it too!), and we’re committed to preserving that experience with every spring and fall issue. Our modernization effort is not about technology for technology’s sake. It is about creating a stronger, more connected professional community. It is about making it easier for you to access knowledge, build relationships, participate in the profession, and engage with your national society. Most importantly, we are making sure CSMLS is positioned to support you today and well into the future. Thank you for your continued trust, engagement and commitment to the profession. I look forward to sharing more as these exciting initiatives come to life.

The Power of Engagement

As I begin my term as Board Chair, I’ve been reflecting on what makes CSMLS such a special part of our profession. Yes, we provide education, advocacy and professional resources. But at our core, we are a community. A community built by members, for members. This year, I hope you’ll see CSMLS not just as an organization you belong to, but as one you can help shape. I believe strongly that leadership doesn’t belong to a select few. It grows from participation. It starts with showing up, saying yes to an opportunity, sharing your ideas, volunteering your time, or making a connection. What initially seem like small steps lead to opportunities you never imagined. I know this because that’s exactly what happened to me. I was first introduced to CSMLS in 2012 at LABCON as a student member. As a new professional, I was honoured to receive the Leaders of Tomorrow award at LABCON 2015 in Montreal. And the following year, I was invited to speak at the conference. At the time, I couldn’t have known those experiences would eventually lead me here, serving as your Board Chair. Taking that step to attend LABCON2012 helped me grow a network of colleagues across Canada. Those connections became mentors, collaborators, and friends. And they opened doors to new opportunities to participate and develop new skills, gain confidence, and deepen my understanding of our profession. Most importantly, they gave me a stronger sense of belonging and purpose within the medical laboratory community. That is the power of engagement. When you participate in your professional association, you invest not only in the future of the profession you invest in yourself. You build relationships. You discover new perspectives. You develop leadership skills. You create opportunities to contribute, influence change, and make a meaningful impact. And perhaps most importantly, you begin to see that the people leading today were once members who simply decided to get involved. As we move forward with the new CSMLS strategic plan, I am excited to help strengthen a member-focused CSMLS that supports professionals at every stage of their careers. Together, we will continue building a connected, inclusive community that is ready to meet the opportunities and challenges ahead. We will expand opportunities for learning, leadership and professional growth so that every member feels empowered to succeed and contribute. I encourage you to attend LABCON. Contribute to the CJMLS. Volunteer for a committee. Consider running for the Board. Attend the AGM. Read eNEWS and stay informed about the issues shaping our profession. Every level of involvement matters. CSMLS is strongest when members see themselves as co-creators of our future, not just as beneficiaries of the association. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as your Board Chair, and I look forward to working alongside you this year. Together, we can continue building a profession and a community where everyone feels they belong, and where the next generation of leaders can clearly see what is possible. Because the future of CSMLS isn't built by a Board alone. It is built by all of us.
